There isn't one right schedule for every dog. How often to groom depends on the breed, the coat and how your dog spends their days. Florida's heat and humidity add a few extra things to think about.

It depends on the coat

Dogs with hair that keeps growing, such as poodles, doodles, shih tzus and many terriers, usually need a haircut every four to eight weeks, because the coat keeps growing and tangles easily. Short-coated dogs often need a bath and brush less often. Double-coated dogs shed heavily and benefit from regular brushing, especially during shedding season.

Humidity and mats

Humid air, swimming and rain can all make a coat tangle faster. A mat is a tight knot of fur that pulls on the skin and can be painful. Brushing at home a few times a week and booking regular visits keeps small tangles from turning into big ones.

Be careful with shaving

It's tempting to shave a dog for summer, but a double coat, like on a husky or golden retriever, helps regulate temperature and protects the skin from sun. Many groomers recommend thinning and brushing out these coats rather than shaving them. If you aren't sure, ask your groomer or your vet.

Signs it's time to book

  • Your dog's coat is dull, tangled or smells
  • Nails click on the floor
  • Hair is covering their eyes
  • Heavy shedding around the house
  • Your dog has been swimming at the beach or canal and the coat feels sticky

If you notice skin redness, hot spots, or constant scratching, check with your veterinarian, as grooming doesn't replace medical care.
